Small Thai Phrases, Big Cultural Connections: Exchange Students Try Speaking Thai After One Semester in Thailand

After spending a semester studying at Mahidol University, our exchange students decided to put their Thai skills to the test and honestly… they impressed us all.

From ordering food in Thai to describing their outfits and everyday conversations, these students showed how much they learned after taking Thai language classes during their exchange experience in Thailand. Many of them even recommended future exchange students to enroll in Thai classes because it helped them feel more connected to local life and culture.

But according to the students, improving Thai was not only about studying in the classroom. It was also about practicing with local people every day.

Here are some of their favorite tips for learning Thai:

Don’t be afraid to ask locals. Thai people are usually very welcoming and happy to help you practice.

Use “ka” if you are female and “krub” if you are male at the end of sentences to sound more polite and respectful.

Make simple phrases part of your daily habit like “Sawasdee” (hello), “Ko Tod” (sorry), and “Mai Pen Rai” (no worries). These phrases help you become more familiar with the language and are also a great way to break the ice with Thai people.

Learning a new language can feel intimidating at first, but sometimes all it takes is the courage to start speaking.

And who knows? After one semester in Thailand, you might surprise yourself too.
