Set in the mountains of Northern Thailand, the Rural Health Program gave students the opportunity to experience a side of the country they may never have discovered as regular travelers. While learning about Thailand’s rural healthcare system, students spent time alongside local doctors and nurses, visited health centers and remote communities, joined home visits, and observed how preventative care reaches people living far from major hospitals. They also supported basic health checks, including measuring blood pressure, height, and weight, while learning how healthcare professionals work with limited resources to care for their communities.

But some of the most memorable learning happened outside the clinical setting. For many students, visiting hill tribe villages became a highlight because it introduced them to communities and ways of life they might never have encountered otherwise. The group also brought their own warmth wherever they went. Many students loved spending time with children and started carrying stickers with them to schools, health centers, and village visits, handing them out whenever they met young people along the way. Even when language made communication more challenging, small gestures like these created an easy way to connect. The experience also challenged some expectations of what a medical internship abroad would look like. Rather than providing direct medical treatment, students learned the value of observing local professionals, asking questions, assisting with appropriate health checks, and understanding how healthcare practices and responsibilities can differ across cultures.

Their time in Northern Thailand was also an opportunity to give something back to the communities that welcomed them. Together, the group contributed 35,000 THB in donations, with much of the funding used to purchase medicine for hill tribe communities and adult diapers for bedridden patients. By the end of the program, rural healthcare had become much more than something to observe. It became a way for students to step beyond the Thailand they already knew and experience the country through its people, communities, and everyday realities.
Sometimes the best way to prepare for a new experience is simply to arrive ready to learn.
