“What stood out to me most was the ‘We before Me’ mindset.”
During the University of Tampa’s healthcare exchange program in Thailand, Dr. Rebecca Olsen witnessed how Thai healthcare professionals bring care directly into communities through home visits and village outreach programs.
She was inspired by the level of dedication shown by healthcare teams and the way they prioritize the well-being of their patients. Throughout the program, she observed a strong sense of collective responsibility and genuine compassion that shaped the way care was delivered.
Dr. Olsen also believes experiences like these help students understand what healthcare is truly about. By working closely with communities and meeting patients in their everyday environments, students gain a deeper appreciation for empathy, trust, and service. These are lessons that cannot be fully learned in a classroom.
Sometimes the most meaningful healthcare lessons happen not inside a hospital, but within the communities healthcare professionals serve.
